CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
My stomach was a little jittery as I made my way out into the Wastes later that day, after sleeping for a few hours and doing a shift on the wall. Iâd been on the north side for it, so I hadnât been able to watch Seraph from above, but when Iâd emerged from the hatch Iâd peered down and seen Gloam and Aury out there, sitting side by side a short distance from the cage.
As I made my way along the base of the wall, I wondered if Auryâor Wynâhad mentioned to Gloam the words Iâd recited to them. What Seraph had said. If they had, Gloam would no doubt have something to say about it.
But when I rounded the corner and the two beasties looked up, he just gave me a kind smile and gestured me over. As I walked toward them, I looked over at Seraph. He was on his knees gripping the bars of the cage, and when our gazes met he let out his little chuff. I smiled, hoping heâd be able to see it in my eyes.
I came to a stop a few feet away from the two monsters, because I didnât want to get too close and risk Seraph getting angry and protective again.
âHe has been a little less responsive today,â Gloam told me, then chuckled. âHonestly, he seems to be in a bit of a bad mood. Not mindless with painâjust grumpy.â
He didnât look grumpy anymore, his eyes lively as they danced over my frame. His long fingers tightened around the bars, making my gut clench with arousal as my gaze fixed on them.
When I forced myself to look away and back at the beasties, Aury shot me a tiny smile. I cleared my throat and unzipped my coat to pull out the hemp bag.
âBrought you some things.â I addressed Seraph directly, because we couldnât keep talking about him like he wasnât here. He understood English. Heâd proven that the night before.
He chuffed again, sitting up straighter on his knees as his eyes blinked and focused on the bag. He rumbled out a few words I didnât understand, but I caught my name at the end in the stilted way he said itâLie-lack.
Gloam let out an incredulous chuckle. âHe said, Thank you, Lilac.â
My mouth curved into a wry smile under my mask, and I took a single step forward before stopping. I knew Gloam would make me use the pole, but⦠I wanted to touch him again. I wanted to be close to him. Surely he needed social interaction and contact at least occasionally. I knew what it was like to be so isolatedâalthough I did it out of choiceâthat you stopped feeling like a person when you hadnât been touched by anyone for a while. Iâd gone from constant skin-on-skin contact back in the cityâmore than I preferredâto absolutely none once Iâd come out here. It was probably the only reason Iâd said yes to Rusty when she approached me with her offer of a casual thing.
